Two million Zimbabwe on ARVS – Zimbabwe Pharmaceutical Industry
Zimbabwe’s Pharmaceutical Industry says it has the potential to locally manufacture anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs)with the necessary support at policy level.
Presenting oral evidence before the Thematic Committee on HIV and AIDS on ARVs manufacturing, stakeholders in the local pharmaceutical sector called for more investment into the production of ARVs.
In 2004, Zimbabwe used to manufacture its own generic ARVs and other drugs through Varichem pharmaceuticals, but production stopped in 2012 after government, which was the largest client, started getting their drugs from India through donors who up to date, supply at least 80 percent of ARVs to the country.
More than two million people are on AntiRetroviral Therapy (ART) in the country.
