SADC chairmanship handed over to Filipe Nyusi
Tanzanian President Dr John Magufuli has handed over the SADC chairmanship to the Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi.
In his key note address during the official opening of the SADC 40th ordinary summit, the outgoing chairperson Dr Magufuli said while Intra-region trade has increased, the region still has a long way to go in eradicating poverty, hunger and diseases.
He thanked President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is the outgoing chairperson on the organ on Politics Defence and Security for trying to bring peace in the region saying defence and security are vital for stability.
Dr Magufuli highlighted that the last summit called for the illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe to be removed and also used the United Nations general assembly to denounce the sanctions
In his acceptance speech the Mozambican president Mr Nyusi said as the world faces the new reality, he promised to drive the organisation to new heights.
