ZUPCO strikes deal with commuter omnibuses
Government through the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) has forged a strategic partnership with commuter omnibus operators in a move expected to see 1000 commuter omnibuses operating under the ZUPCO franchise to ease transport challenges for the commuting public.
The ZUPCO and commuter omnibus deal is already taking shape with 45 commuter omnibuses now plying various suburbs in Harare.
Chief Executive Officer Mr Everisto Madangwa confirmed that the figure of commuter omnibus operators negotiating the deal continue to swell as his organisation targets 1000 kombis for the programme.
The joint public private transport partnership will see the commuter omnibuses charging a double of ZUPCO bus fares per trip. Where ZUPCO charges one dollar, the commuter omnibuses will charge two dollars as compared to between five and eight dollars for a trip being charged by other commuter operators.
