Silalatshani irrigation left with two weeks supply of water
Silalatshane irrigation scheme in Insiza district is left with two weeks supply of water as the current levels of its supply dam cannot sustain agriculture activity up to the next rainy season.
Owing to the low rains received last season, levels at Silalatshane dam which also supplies water to West nicholson and Collen bawn areas have continued to recede amid revelations that the farmers have water enough to just irrigate their crops for the next two weeks.
The news has come as a major blow to some farmers who are growing sugar beans and garlic under contract farming.
The scheme’s chairperson Joel Ndlovu said they have since started water rationing to ensure that planted crops reach maturity.
