Bulawayo survey shows residents use raw sewer to water vegetables
A snap survey by our news crew in Bulawayo’s surbubs has shown that most residents are using raw sewer to water their vegetables despite the existence of proper water wells at their irrigation schemes, a situation health experts say exposes residents to several bacterial infections that might cause typhoid and cases leading to cholera.
Some of the ‘hustler’ farmers who spoke to Khulumani fm news say they prefer to use raw sewer as it is fertile and easy to access as opposed to the water in protected wells in a sign of ignorance on the dangers the water poses to humans who buy their products.
A medical expert Dr Dayson Chataika says, the consumption of products watered by raw sewer is a danger to human health singling out products like onions and cucumbers which might be taken raw through salads.
